Dear Parents and Students, It's time again for the ASVAB. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery combines a skills test and interest survey to help identify careers for further exploration. The test is available for all students 10-12, though I highly recommend it for students who are about to graduate and don't yet have an after high school plan. The ASVAB is a requirement for students who want to join the military after school; however, all students have the option as to whether or not they want their scores to be released. Please inform your students we will be administering this test on April 8th from 8:30am -11:30. There is no cost to take the exam. If you have any students who are interested please sign them up or send them to the Career or Counseling Center. You can find additional information on the ASVAB website, www.asvabprogram.com

Scholarships:
Scholarships are gifts of money received for a wide variety of reasons, including but not limited to academic performance, community service, leadership activities, financial need, athletics, and special interest in a particular area of study or career.
Students earning high marks in high school are at an advantage when competing for scholarships, but that does not mean that other students should not apply, or that a high GPA guarantees a scholarship. Other criteria are at times weighed more heavily in the selection process.
In order to receive scholarships students must apply for them. Applying for scholarships is a lot of work but there is no way around it. There are scholarships largely based on a students need for financial support, but there are also scholarships which are based on students talents. These are competitive. Academically strong students involved in leadership and service activities are more likely to receive them. However, one never knows about the mix of talents each organization or school is looking to support with financial assistance.
Good scholarship search sources include the students/ parents employers and church/civic organizations to which they belong, the colleges they plan to attend scholarship websites and our Career Center.
We receive scholarship opportunity information from corporations, foundations, colleges and individuals. We publish and post the information in the Career Center. Students are advised to check it regularly. Most scholarships are specifically for seniors, but there are some for sophomores and juniors as well.
Should you have further questions about scholarships please feel free to call the Career Center at (360) 804-4534.
